Isn’t Angelinais JoeLee

It began as a quip from the homeless street kids I volunteered with in Melbourne in the 1990s, and like chewing gum on my shoes, it stuck. I’d always reply, “Yes – it isn’t Angelina the beautiful, it’s JoeLee the ugly. And you and I, like caterpillars, can become beautiful butterflies too.”

What started as a joke became a shared mantra – a small light pointing toward possibility. As these resourceful “ugly” kids turned their lives around, they trusted me to walk alongside them, and I evolved with them.

That’s what the homeless street kids in Melbourne I worked with as a volunteer used to tease me with back in the 1990s – and the joke stuck.

I always replied with the same line:

That path drew me away from my career as an Export Marketing Manager and back to university, reflection, and time in sacred places. Today, my work is shaped by that journey – walking beside others as they remember their inherent worth, reclaim their inner strength, and grow into who they want to become.

What I Do

Providing counselling, therapy, work coaching, mentoring, life coaching and spiritual guidance

If your car broke down, you’d fix it straight away – so why wait when it comes to your wellbeing, which is even more important, is it not?

When we come together, we walk as companions on the journey. I support you as a whole person – spirit, heart, body and mind. My role is to help you live the life you deserve by offering tools, skills and guidance that empower you to sustain meaningful change. It’s the difference between giving you the fish and teaching you how to fish. As Lao Tzu reminds us, the true teacher helps the student realise, “We did it ourselves.”

With over 25 years of experience, I draw on counselling, psychology, philosophy, coaching, fitness, holistic practices and my lived experiences across several countries. My approach integrates solution-focused, art, psychodynamic, sand-play and cognitive-behavioural therapies with mindfulness, qigong, movement, breathwork, and both Eastern and Western traditions.

Every person is unique, and so is the path we create together. I tailor our work to your needs so you can cultivate real, lasting transformation.

Issues I Can Help

I will help you and also teach you how!
I will “Teach you how to fish, not give you the fish” so you can be self-empowered.
When the teacher’s work is done the students will say, “We did it ourselves” – Lao Tzu

My Goal & Philosophy

My deepest intention is to empower you from the inside out – to help you awaken your inner resourcefulness, strengthen your centre, and learn the “how to” of caring for yourself, supporting those you love, and uplifting others. When one person grows, the world shifts. When many grow, the world transforms.

If I help two people, and each of them helps two more, the ripple becomes a wave:
2 → 4 → 8 → 16 → 32…
This is how change travels – quietly at first, then suddenly with momentum – flowing through families, workplaces, communities, and beyond.

When we meet, bring a notebook. Bring your curiosity. Bring the part of you that still believes in possibility. This work is not about dependency; it is about equipping you deeply so that, in time, you won’t need me. Not because the journey ends, but because you will have grown the clarity, strength, and tools to travel it with confidence on your own.

Although my university training gave me knowledge, it is the thousands of people who have allowed me to walk beside them who have been my greatest teachers. Through their courage, struggles, and breakthroughs, I have learned more than any classroom could offer. I could never live that many lives – yet each one has shaped me.
Truly, they are my teachers.

About Me

I was born in Singapore and grew up on St Michael’s Road, sharing a home with three other families. My childhood was shaped by neighbours who were truly family because we cared for one another, and by the rich spiritual landscape that surrounded us – the Sri Lankaramaya Buddhist Temple, St Michael’s Church, and Shuang Lin Monastery. My father encouraged me to learn the teachings of the Buddha and the Tao, while my mother brought me to catechism. They never debated which faith was greater; instead, they instilled the values that would guide my life: kindness, compassion, and what Martin Luther King Jr. called “the content of character.”

As a teenager, I had to grow up quickly to stand on my own. I made many mistakes, but they taught me that true strength lies in the courage to reflect, take self responsibility, apologise sincerely, make amends, and keep striving to do better. It is truly about the phoenix rising from its own ashes, much like the grace echoed in John Newton’s Amazing Grace.

My greatest inspiration was my mother, Teresa. At 14, she endured family gender discrimination and the hardships of the Japanese occupation of Singapore. Yet she lived with kindness and dignity, teaching me the difference between forgiveness and reconciliation. In 1987, she met Mother Teresa of Calcutta – an encounter that left an indelible mark on our family. At 21, I was blessed to be mentored by Reverend Cas, a Spiritualist and disciple of The Venerable Bede Griffiths (Swami Dayananda), the Benedictine monk and mystic whose teachings deeply shaped my spiritual path.

After completing national service in the army, I worked in a range of roles – from Delivery Rider and Fitness Trainer to Account Manager with Needham Standard International Advertising, where I managed the McDonald’s Restaurant account. My career then took me overseas, where I held roles as Marketing Manager, Product Manager, and Export Manager with multinational companies, including EMAIL Limited.

Yet what transformed me most was volunteering with homeless street children in Melbourne. Their courage and resilience awakened something in me. With both trepidation and hope, I chose what Scott Peck called “the road less travelled.” I shifted from my corporate life and returned to university to pursue a broader and more integrated education – in counselling, philosophy, psychology, and spirituality – while deepening my spiritual practice in sacred places and monasteries.

Since 2006, I have worked as a Counsellor with one of Australia’s largest counselling service providers, and I have also served as a Student Mentor in schools. Today, my work feels fully aligned with my calling. It allows me to live a purpose-driven life – one that brings the fulfilment and meaning I once only hoped for.
